Natural Turf
GO WITH THE MOTZ TRUSTED NAME IN TURF
Our turf products are grown from high-quality seed cultivated in rich, organic river soil. We consider location, usage, exposure to the sun, and maintenance to help you select the most suitable grass.
TURF-TYPE FESCUE
Fescue thrives in both cold and warm climates and blends well with other grasses. Motz Turf Farms’ Fescue has wider blades and a lighter green shade to create an attractive uniformity in your lawn. Fescue should be watered once each week to maintain its color and appearance. While it may go dormant if not watered, it will green up again with moisture. Fescue has the lowest fertilizer requirements of any cool-season grass and is naturally resistant to damaging insects.
GRASS SEED
We’ve been working the local soil and dealing with local weather since 1868. The result? Grass seed blends that are precisely designed to thrive under local conditions. We’ll be happy to consult with you about the perfect seed for your landscape. Or let our experts do the seeding for you.

Tips
WATERING & MAINTENANCE:
- Be sure your new sod receives ½” or more of water within the first ½ hour of installation. Keep in mind – nearly all sod failures are due to poor watering practices.
- Be careful not to allow puddling or run-off, both to protect the lawn and conserve water.
- Following this initial watering, your new turf should receive ½” – 1” of water every other day, until it begins to “root” – about 2 weeks. Remember weather conditions may require some modifications to these amounts.
- After a few weeks, scale back on watering yet making sure your lawn has enough moisture to survive extended dry periods.
- Areas near driveways and buildings are more likely to show stress due to reflected head and may require additional water.
- During the first few weeks, moderate use of your lawn is fine, but avoid heavy or concentrated traffic as this may cause slippage and tracking.
MOWING & FERTILIZATION:
- Your new lawn can be mowed two weeks after installation. Maintain a height of 2 ½” in the spring and fall, and 3” in the summer. Generally, you should not remove more than 1/3 of the grass height per mowing.
- You do not need to remove grass clippings, as this is a good way to recycle nitrogen and nutrients back into the soil. Grass clippings do not contribute to thatch build-up.
- For best mowing results, keep your mower blades sharp and avoid hard turns. Try to avoid mowing the lawn when conditions are wet, since this may cause ruts or damage.
FAQs
DO YOU SELL SOD TO HOMEOWNERS? WHAT IS THE MINIMUM ORDER?
Yes! Sod is available for homeowners to purchase. There is no minimum order; you may purchase as little as one 21″ x 42″ sheet.
WHAT ARE THE ADVANTAGES OF SOD VS. SEEDING?
Sod provides homeowners with a two-year head start in their goal of achieving a thick lawn. Its instant beauty and erosion prevention make it a natural choice for those not willing to spend a year or two starting from seed. We like to say seeding has its place – and that’s on our farm! We seed every fall when conditions are ideal. Our rich topsoil allows our customers to reap the benefits of turf grown to maturity and ready for harvest when their projects need it.
WHAT IS THE BEST TIME OF YEAR FOR SOD INSTALLATION?
With good site preparation and adequate care, any time of the year is suitable. Naturally, summer’s heat will require a bit more water for new sod than spring or fall. Some large installations may require installation in stages to allow for thorough watering, for example, the backyard, followed in a day or two by the front.
IS TURF LOCALLY GROWN?
Yes, because it allows for harvest and installation on the same day. Fresh is best. Don’t hesitate to ask when your turf was harvested–we’ll be glad to keep you in the loop.
WHAT IS THE BEST TYPE OF GRASS FOR THIS AREA?
Fescue sod requires less maintenance and care than bluegrass, and we proudly helped pioneer its introduction to this region. Motz Turf has a blend of 10-12% bluegrass and the remainder fescue. This combines the injury-recovering ability of bluegrass with the longevity of fescue, making for an attractive, durable lawn. Do you have additional questions or concerns? Contact us today!
